ACT TOOL · PICK THE FORK ON PURPOSE

Choice Point

A hundred forks a day, most taken on autopilot. This catches one - and lets you pick it awake.
ACT · Choice Point

Choice point, definedLife keeps handing you forks: the next move takes you toward the person you mean to be, or away on autopilot. A choice point catches one fork in daylight and picks on purpose. Not every fork - one.

Where the reps take you

Never a straight line. Some forks you take on autopilot - and you climb anyway.

21 days to rewire a thought.
21 weeks to rewire a life.

When you're stretched thin, autopilot drives - and autopilot always picks away: silence, distance, one more task instead of one real minute. No shame; that's what tired does. This catches one fork and lets you choose it awake. When it's full: screenshot it, print it, or make a shareable card.

HOW TO WORK IT

The Five Moves

Work top to bottom. Tap a move to open it - and in the record below, tap any title to jump back here.

1 · The Moment

What happened - the fork life just handed you. One or two lines, plain.

For example: “He criticised the supper I cooked.”

2 · The Pull

What do you feel like doing? Write the honest version, not the polished one. The pull is information, not a verdict.

For example: “Going silent for the rest of the night.”

3 · Toward - or Away?

The fork. An away-move dodges a feeling. A toward-move serves a value - even when it's harder. Check the outside. The after-test: away leaves you hollow later; toward leaves you steadier, even sore. The words: “so I don't have to feel / deal / say” is away language; “because it matters” is toward. No shame on the pull - away-moves are human.

For example: “Silence helps me avoid the fight - and avoids him entirely. That's away, dressed as calm.”

4 · The Value at Stake

Name the value this moment is really about. One word. That's what the fork is actually asking.

For example: “Steadiness.”

5 · The Next Move

One small toward-move - doable in the next hour, pointed at that value. Small counts. Chosen beats drifted.

For example: “Say 'that stung', and stay in the room.”

See a worked example first
Moment
He criticised the supper I cooked.
The Pull
Go silent for the rest of the night. Cold, polite, gone.
The Sort
Away tell: silence dodges the fight - and dodges him. Toward tell: steadiness matters more than winning the evening.
The Value
Steadiness.
Next Move
Say “that stung”, once - then stay in the room.

The pull wanted the silent treatment. The value wanted one honest sentence. Four words, and the evening stayed whole.

YOUR TURN

Your Choice Point

Type into each box. Tap a title to see what it means. Your “Say it” line builds at the bottom as you write.

My Choice Point
The Sort

The fork: away is human, not shameful. Naming it is the move - and it only takes a minute.

They look the same some days?

They do - rest can be toward, and scrolling numb can be away. Check the outside signals.

The after-test. An away-move leaves you hollow an hour later. A toward-move leaves you steadier - even when it stung.

The words. “So I don't have to feel it / say it / deal with it” - away. “Because it matters” - toward.

The camera catch. The act can film the same either way. What the camera can't fake is the hour after - so judge the move by where it leaves you.

Away: “Silent all evening so it stays calm.” Toward: “'That stung' - said once, then staying in the room.”

Picking away sometimes doesn't sink you. Seeing the fork at all is the skill - the next one comes within the hour.

The pull was [your answer]. Toward looks like [your answer] - for [your answer].

“Choose life” was said to worn-out people at a real fork, not to winners on a good day. He doesn't just point at the choice - He stands in it with you.

"This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life."

Deuteronomy 30:19
Why it works

Every toward-move re-teaches your brain's reward system what actually pays off. Choose toward often enough and the pull itself starts to shift.

A general mechanism, not a guarantee. This supports good care; it doesn't replace it.
