The Five Moves
Work top to bottom. Tap a move to open it - and in the record below, tap any title to jump back here.
1 · Pick the Distance
How far ahead is the one writing - a year? Five? Far enough that today's fog has lifted; close enough to remember it.
For example: “Two years out.”
2 · Let Them Speak
Draft freely - don't edit, don't polish. Let the one who came through this stretch say what they actually saw.
For example: “You stayed. You learned the meds cold. You kept one friend on the line.”
3 · Coach - or Critic?
The fork. Some lines came from the coach - the kind witness. Some are the critic wearing a kind mask. Check the outside. The words: “finally, at least, still hadn't” is critic language; “kept going, learned, held on” is coach. The friend test: would you say the line to a friend in your chair? Your body: coach lines land warm; critic lines brace.
For example: “'At least you eventually got organised' - critic in a cardigan. Cut it.”
4 · Keep the Coach
Rewrite the letter, coach lines only. Three lines is plenty. Kind and true - not soft and false.
For example: “You stayed. That mattered more than you knew at the time.”
5 · Sign It, Keep It
Sign it from the future you, and put it where the bad days can find it - the Bible, the sock drawer, the phone notes.
For example: “Folded into the Bible, at the Psalms.”
See a worked example first
The critic wrote two lines and lost them both. The coach's three lines are in the Bible now - where the bad days know to look.
Your Letter
Type into each box. Tap a title to see what it means. Your “Say it” line builds at the bottom as you write.
The fork: kindness that is true, not soft. A critic line slipping through is normal - cut it and carry on.
Not sure whose line it is?
You don't have to judge your heart. Check the outside signals.
The words. “Finally, at least, still hadn't, took you long enough” - critic grammar, even in a warm tone. “Kept going, learned, held on, came back” - coach grammar.
The friend test. Read the line out loud. Would you say it, word for word, to a friend sitting in your chair? If not, cut it.
Your body. Coach lines land warm and settle you. Critic lines brace something - jaw, chest, gut.
Coach: “You stayed, and that mattered.” Critic: “At least you finally stopped moping.”
Finding critic lines in your draft isn't failure - it proves the sort was needed. Cut them without a funeral.

Hope with a future is His wording, not wishful thinking. The plans ahead of you were never a mystery to God - and they were never a punishment either.
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11Vividly imagining a future scene runs it on the brain's simulation machinery - the same circuits that rehearse real movement - which makes the road toward it feel walkable.
A general mechanism, not a guarantee. This supports good care; it doesn't replace it.
