ACT TOOL · THE POCKET COMPASS

Values Reframe

Mid-argument, mid-dread, mid-loop - one question re-aims the moment: which value am I moving toward here?
ACT · Values Reframe

Values reframe, definedOne question, carried in a pocket: “Which value am I moving toward here?” Asked mid-mess, it turns a snagged moment into a steering moment. This is the pocket version of your compass - for the moments the big tools can't reach.

Where the reps take you

Never a straight line. Some snags keep you a whole evening - and you climb anyway.

21 days to rewire a thought.
21 weeks to rewire a life.

You won't always have ten minutes and a worksheet. You'll have a kitchen, a raised voice, and four seconds. This is the four-second tool: the question, the sort, the re-aim. Practise it here so it's there when the kitchen needs it. When it's full: screenshot it, print it, or make a shareable card.

HOW TO WORK IT

The Five Moves

Work top to bottom. Tap a move to open it - and in the record below, tap any title to jump back here.

1 · The Snag

The moment that's got you - the argument, the dread, the loop. One or two lines, plain.

For example: “Third argument this week about the car keys.”

2 · The Question

Ask it - out loud if you can: “Which value am I moving toward here?” First honest answer, not the polished one.

For example: “Right now? Winning. Which isn't a value.”

3 · Toward - or Away?

The fork. An away-answer dodges a feeling: “so I don't have to feel scared.” A toward-answer serves something named: “because his dignity matters.” Check the outside. The words: “so I don't have to” versus “because it matters”. The after-test: away leaves hollow, toward leaves steadier. Your body: a named value settles you even mid-mess.

For example: “'Winning the argument so I don't have to feel scared about the driving' - that's away wearing a helmet.”

4 · Name the Value

One word. The real one under the mess. That's what the moment was always about.

For example: “Honesty - with kindness attached.”

5 · Re-aim

Same moment, re-pointed at the value. Usually smaller than the fight and braver than the dodge.

For example: “Tell him the truth about the licence - beside him on the couch, not across the kitchen.”

The Snag
Third argument this week about the car keys.
Question
Which value am I moving toward here? Honest answer: winning. Which isn't a value.
The Sort
Away: winning the argument so I don't have to feel scared about the driving. Toward: honesty about the licence - because his dignity matters.
The Value
Honesty, with kindness attached.
Re-aim
Tell him the truth about the licence - beside him on the couch, not across the kitchen.

The fight was about keys. The value was about dignity. Re-aimed, the same conversation took four minutes and no casualties.

YOUR TURN

Your Reframe

Type into each box. Tap a title to see what it means. Your “Say it” line builds at the bottom as you write.

My Reframe
The Sort

The fork: away wears good disguises - efficiency, calm, being right. Name it without shame; it was protecting you.

The answers sound the same?

They can - the same act can be either. Check the outside signals.

The words. “So I don't have to feel it / say it / face it” - away. “Because it matters” - toward.

The after-test. An away-aim leaves you hollow within the hour. A toward-aim leaves you steadier, even when it cost more.

Your body. Say the value out loud. If it's the real one, something settles - even before you act on it.

Away: “Win the keys argument.” Toward: “Honesty about the licence, kindly.”

Catching yourself mid-dodge is the entire skill. The re-aim usually takes less courage than the fight was already costing.

The Value

Tap any that fit, then add your own:

Re-aim
Say it
Snagged: [your answer]. The value in play: [your answer]. Re-aimed: [your answer].

Where your treasure is, your heart follows - that's a law of the heart, not a scolding. Name the treasure in the moment, and your heart has somewhere to go besides the fight.

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Matthew 6:21
Why it works

Asking “which value?” wakes the brain's valuing circuitry - the region that weighs what matters - right in the middle of a moment, when autopilot usually drives.

A general mechanism, not a guarantee. This supports good care; it doesn't replace it.
