DBT TOOL · IN THE HEAT OF IT

STOP

When you are one breath from snapping, shutting down, or walking out - this is how you stay in the room.

STOP, defined

STOP, defined STOP is a pause you put between the feeling and what you do next. It is not bottling it up, and it is not giving in. It is four small moves - Stop, step back, observe, proceed - that hand the next move back to you instead of the emotion.

Never a straight line. You pause some, you miss some - and you climb anyway.

21 DAYS TO REWIRE A THOUGHT.
21 WEEKS TO REWIRE A LIFE.

You are not failing. When the same hard moment comes and the pull is to react, you do not need more patience - you need ninety seconds. Stop, breathe out, look at what is really happening, then choose one small kind move. Staying in the room is the win.

DBT TOOL · THE MOVES

The moves

Plain and small. Tap any move to open it.

1 · Stop

Freeze. Do not move a muscle. The urge wants you to act this second - you do not have to obey it.

2 · Take a step back

Breathe out, slow and long. Step back, in your body or just in your head, and give yourself room.

3 · Observe

Notice what is true, just the facts. Your body, the other person, without the story on top.

4 · Proceed mindfully

Ask what you want to come out of this, then take the next small step toward that, not toward the urge.

5 · Step back and tell the difference

In the heat, reacting can feel like deciding. Step back and tell the difference - a reaction serves the urge; a choice serves what matters to you. Use the prompts in the record to tell it apart.

THE MOMENT
They asked the same question for the fifth time.
STOP and STEP BACK
I stopped, did not snap, and breathed out.
OBSERVE
Jaw tight, chest hot; they were not trying to upset me.
PROCEED
I answered once more, gently, then stepped into the hall for two minutes.
DISTRESS
Eased from 8/10 to 4/10.
The moment did not change. I did. That is the rep.

Stillness is not doing nothing. It is making room for the One who is already with you - that is where the steadiness comes from, not from gritting your teeth.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Psalm 46:10 · NIV
Why it works

A short pause gives the thinking part of your brain a moment to catch up to the alarm and steady it - read the research.

A general mechanism, not a guarantee. This supports good care; it does not replace it.
