DBT TOOL · STOP THE FIGHT WITH WHAT IS

Radical Acceptance

When the pain is real and cannot be changed right now - this is how you stop the fight that only makes it heavier.

Radical Acceptance, defined

Radical Acceptance, defined Radical acceptance is stopping the fight against a reality you cannot change right now. It is not approval, and it is not giving up. It is letting go of this should not be so you can stop adding suffering on top of pain, and put your energy where it can actually go.

Never a straight line. You accept, you resist, you turn back - that turning is the whole skill.

21 DAYS TO REWIRE A THOUGHT.
21 WEEKS TO REWIRE A LIFE.

Fighting a thing that is already true does not change it - it just wears you out. Name what is, plainly. Notice where you are arguing with reality. Loosen that grip. Accepting is not saying it is okay - it is stopping the war so you can breathe. Turn your mind back as many times as it takes.

DBT TOOL · THE MOVES

The moves

Plain and small. Tap any move to open it.

1 · Name what is

Say the hard thing plainly, without softening or arguing: this is what is, right now.

2 · Notice the fight

Notice where you are fighting reality - this should not be happening. That fight is extra pain.

3 · Let go of the fight

Loosen your grip on the fight. Accepting is not approving. It is stopping the war with what is already true.

4 · Turn the mind again

You will pick the fight back up. That is fine. Gently turn your mind back to accepting, again and again.

5 · Step back and tell the difference

Acceptance is only for what you cannot change right now. Step back and sort it - what here is out of my hands, and what can I still affect? Use the prompts in the record to tell it apart.

Acceptance is not defeat. It is opening your hands. You get still, you stop wrestling what only grace can carry, and you let the One who holds it all actually hold it.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Why it works

Letting go of the fight with reality lets the thinking brain settle the alarm instead of feeding it - read the research.

A general mechanism, not a guarantee. This supports good care; it does not replace it.
