DBT TOOL · HELP THEM FEEL UNDERSTOOD

Validate the One You Love

When the one you are caring for is hurting and you do not know what to say - this is how you help them feel understood, which is often what they needed most.

Validate the One You Love, defined

Validate the One You Love, defined Validating someone is showing them their feeling makes sense - not fixing it, not agreeing with every word, just letting them feel understood. You turn toward them, reflect what you hear, and name why it makes sense. It is one of the most steadying things one person can do for another.

Never a straight line. You will miss sometimes - turning back toward them is the repair and the skill.

21 DAYS TO REWIRE A THOUGHT.
21 WEEKS TO REWIRE A LIFE.

You do not have to fix it - being understood is often the help. Put everything down and turn toward them. Say back what you hear. Name why it makes sense. Stay warm and real. You are not agreeing to everything - you are letting them know they are not alone in it.

DBT TOOL · THE MOVES

The moves

Plain and small. Tap any move to open it.

1 · Be fully present

Put the phone down and turn toward them. Full attention is the first and biggest gift.

2 · Reflect what you hear

Say back what you hear, plainly. So it felt like no one had your back today.

3 · Name what makes sense

Name why their feeling makes sense. Of course you are wiped out - anyone would be.

4 · Stay warm and real

Stay warm and genuine. You do not have to fix it or agree with everything - just let them feel understood.

5 · Step back and tell the difference

Fixing and validating feel similar but land differently. Step back - are you solving their problem, or helping them feel understood? Use the prompts in the record to tell it apart.

To sit with someone in their pain and let them feel seen is deeply like the heart of God. You get still, you turn toward them, and you become a small picture of how He draws near.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Psalm 46:10 · NIV
Why it works

Feeling understood by a calm, present person helps another nervous system settle, we steady each other - read the research.

A general mechanism, not a guarantee. This supports good care; it does not replace it.
